The New Frontier
The Settler's Kitchen Company, LLC, from Westport, Connecticut, introduces the ‘New Frontier’: an innovative ‘hybrid’ take on old wood-fired, cooking technology. Made and finished by local craftsmen, each hand-made steel cooker (I call it a ‘hybrid outdoor kitchen’), includes six different ways to cook anything you can dream up. When fully extended (over 7 feet), there is ample room using the fire-pit component for grilling or using the griddle, or using the rig for hanging up to 2 cast iron pots or using the stainless steel turn-spit, all of which can be ordered separately. The fire-pit is also the feeder to the smoker/oven, allowing you to precisely control the heat up to about 450 degrees. A competition grade thermometer makes it easy to maintain slow smoking temperatures or bread baking blasts. The New Frontier requires only kindling to maintain a constant temperature of 350 degrees in the oven. It works great with either wood or coal.
Set high off the ground the New Frontier is ergonomically designed to be at the right height for cooking. Two 16 inch steel wheels (not the wheels shown), provide a long lasting ‘Rugged’ ride as you haul it over the trail, wheel it through sand or up the steps to your deck. When stowed away for travel, (or if you’re a part-timer, the Winter), the whole machine fits perfectly onto a standard 2x4 foot tow-hitch platform, also, available separately. The pipes, pots & poles are detachable for cleaning and fit in the fire-pit for travel or storage. It’s finished in either; stainless steel, regular steel with high temperature black powder coat, or a combination thereof, (photo above is a stainless and powder coat combo). After extensive field trials, some design modifications have been made to the version above, including: a front shelf for food prep, a lower shelf for utensil storage and resting pot lids during cooking. The frame has been modified to allow for easier trail blazing.
The result is a fully transportable, off-the-grid ‘dream’ cooker that would look as good in your back yard, as it would in the back woods. You’ll never go back to regular grills and smokers, you can literally cook anything, anywhere, anytime.
